Judging by the parking lot alone you could tell this year's Quiet Water Symposium was a success.
This year, the committee held the Verlen Kruger Award ceremony in the evening, after the symposium, at the Coral Gables in East Lansing. I hadn't been there in years.
I was honored to be called to the podium to congratulate this year's Verlen Kruger Award winner, Ron Sell of Unadilla Boatworks. Click here to hear my extemporaneous speech.

Quiet Water Symposium 2014
Had a good day at the Quiet Water. Met Joe Root for the first time. Ron Sell had an exhibit of his canoes.
Greeted by a lot of people I've known over the years. Recognized all their faces but couldn't remember all their names. Talked to many exhibitors. The Quiet Water has grown by leaps and bounds.
Matt Turner showed me the full-size Hinsdale archaeological map of Michigan he had made up. Impressive.
Met with all the Verlen Kruger Award winners who were there and was in a group photo.

The Verlen Kruger Award is given annually to a person who has supported and promoted conservation and paddle sports in Michigan.
I'm proud of my "ulitimate son" Charlie. Prestigious award, well deserved.

Quiet Water Symposium Saturday March 6 at MSU Pavilion
At last year's Quiet Water Symposium
The Quiet Water Symposium runs from 9 to 6 on Saturday at the MSU Pavilion off Mt Hope Road at the South end of the MSU campus (out in the farms). I will have an exhibit of my stuff. Son Jim will be displaying his new Bell Rob Roy 15 canoe with an exhibit on the history of the Rob Roy (circa 1865) which I have prepared. Erik Vosteen and Kevin Finney will be nearby with their elm bark and whitewood dugout canoes. Signed copies of Kit Lane's "Grand" are being given to thank financial backers of Grand River Expedition 2010. If they have any left they will be selling them at the QWS.
